The Burden of the Feminine Heirloom

Created: June 2024

Medium: 23k gold gilding & vitreous painting in a lightbox

The Burden of the Feminine Heirloom is a kiln-fired vitreous painting with gold gilding and copper-foiled stained glass, layered in three sheets within a lightbox.

The liver, a symbol of resilience, reflects the feminine experience of enduring burdens while striving to restore balance. It not only cleanses toxins but also carries the emotional and generational trauma passed down through women. Despite these inherited struggles, the liver regenerates and adapts, much like the women who bear these weights.

In contrast, the lanternflies—parasitic and destructive—represent forces that exploit and deplete, mirroring societal systems that disregard their impact. The juxtaposition of the liver’s healing power with the swarm’s devastation highlights the tension between resilience and depletion, cleansing and harm.

The work challenges viewers to examine the complexities of healing and imbalance. It reflects the anger of inheriting feminine trauma and the exhaustion of being drained, while honoring the strength and determination to endure and thrive despite these challenges.
